The main object of the project is the realization of circular economy ideas by optimising the combustion process in order to obtain combustion by-products likely to valorisation and usable in industry. Optimalisation of low quality solid fuels combustion (e.g. biomass or refuse-derived fuel) will be based mostly on upgrading fuel properties with additives, especially connected with slagging, fouling and high temperature corrosion and on reduction of harmful compounds (e.g. NOx, Hg, HCl, HF, NH3). The purpose of the optimalisation is to produce specific by-products subsequently subjected to thermal and chemical functionalization resulting in obtaining useful materials, e.g. geomats, insulations or sorption medium. Project objectives will be carried through usage of innovative, multifunctional Core Combustion Facility (CCF) – semi-technical boiler stand allowing to develop research service concerning modification of combustion process in order to receive most useful by-products.

PROJECT WORK STRUCTURE

  • WP 1 - OPTIMISATION OF COMBUSTION PROCESS

Work package 1 aims to tackle the major hazards associated with combustion of low quality solid fuels due to its properties. The combustion process will be optimised in terms of fuel pre-treatment thanks to modifying its composition by a various kinds of additives and by additive in-furnace injection.

T1.1 – Fuel and fireside additives

T1.2 – Fouling and slagging control

T1.3 - Corrosion control

T1.4 - Gas and solid emission control

  • WP2 - VALORISATION OF COMBUSTION BY-PRODUCTS

Work package 2 aims to develop methods of combustion by-products valorization and functionalization in order to obtain materials and products usable in industry.

T2.1 - Thermal and chemical functionalization of combustion by-products

T2.2 - Ammonia removal from fly ash

T2.3 - Mercury capture and control

  • WP3 - PROOF OF CONCEPT

As part of work package 3, proof of concept will be performed consisting in predicting the properties of regranulates based on polyethylene and polypropylene produced from a non-homogeneous stream of post-consumer raw materials modified with by-products of combustion (UPS) based on an artificial neural networks model and research on a technical scale.

The effect of the work package 3 will be the technology that allows the production of several qualified regranulates from post-consumer materials with the addition of fillers based on UPS and post-consumer materials based on UPS modified with nanostructured materials such as halloysite.
